The Current State of U.S. Golf: Financial Health, Participation Trends, and Course Developments

U.S. golf facilities are healthier financially than they have been in decades, driven by a surge in new players and a shift toward professional management.

The U.S. golf industry is experiencing its strongest financial health in decades, according to recent longitudinal studies (Page 1). Despite a significant decrease in the number of golf facilities over the past two decades—approximately 2,000 fewer courses today compared to 20 years ago—the industry remains robust (Page 1).

This resurgence is largely attributed to increased participation. Between 2020 and 2025, more than three million Americans began playing golf annually (Page 1). Although only a quarter of these newcomers become regular players, the overall volume of play has remained high (Page 1). As of mid-2026, the industry is on track to set a new record for the number of rounds played, assuming no unforeseen interruptions (Page 1). In June 2026, the number of rounds played exceeded the previous year's record (Page 1).

However, there are seasonal variations to consider. July is typically the peak month for golf play, but July 2026 saw the first year-over-year decline in some states (Page 1). Similarly, August 2026 experienced a notable drop in play in the Northeast and Midwest, likely due to higher precipitation levels (Page 1).

Operationally, there's a growing trend toward professional management. The number of multi-course operators is steadily increasing, with hundreds more facilities now managed by third-party companies (Page 1). Additionally, the rate of new golf course development has reached its highest level in over a decade, with ongoing projects in 32 states (Page 1).

Several notable maintenance and renovation projects are currently underway. The Country Club of North Carolina has announced renovation plans (Page 2). Tubac is undertaking green renovations on the Anza Course (Page 2). Hogan Park golf course is in the middle of a renovation, with 18 holes already completed and the remaining 18 in progress (Page 2). Delray Beach Golf Course is being reimagined with modern playing surfaces (Page 2). Kawonu Golf Club is also undergoing renovations to preserve its history while incorporating modern course design elements (Page 2).
