How to Play a Provisional Ball Correctly
Save time on the course by playing a provisional ball. The key is to announce your intent clearly before hitting the second shot, ensuring the first ball is considered lost or out of bounds.
What you need
- Golf ball (original)
- Golf ball (provisional)
- Teammates or spectators

Steps
- Before you strike the second ball, you must tell someone nearby that you are playing a provisional. You need to use the specific word 'provisional' or clearly indicate the ball is being played under Rule 18.3. Phrases like 'I’m going to play another just in case' are acceptable if they clearly signal the provisional nature. If you fail to announce this, the second ball becomes your ball in play under stroke-and-distance penalty, and you lose the status of the first shot.
- Once announced, hit the provisional ball from the teeing area. You may play multiple provisionals if necessary, but you must clearly announce each one as you go. This ensures there is no confusion about which ball is currently in play.
- You can continue playing the provisional ball without losing its status as long as you are hitting it from a spot that is the same distance or farther from the hole than where the original ball is estimated to be. If you move closer to the hole than the estimated location of the first ball, the provisional status ends.
- Allow for a three-minute search period for the original ball. If the original ball is found outside a penalty area and is not out of bounds after this time, you must abandon the provisional and continue with the original ball. If the original ball is found in a penalty area, you must abandon the provisional ball. If the original ball is lost or out of bounds, the provisional ball becomes your ball in play.
Why it works
Fair Play and Pace
The rule exists to ensure players adhere to fair play and maintain the integrity of the game. It prevents players from unfairly gaining an advantage by secretly switching balls. Additionally, it helps maintain the pace of play by allowing players to continue without waiting out a long search if the ball might be lost or out of bounds.

If it goes wrong
Ambiguous Language
The term 'otherwise clearly indicate' can be open to interpretation. To avoid disputes, use the word 'provisional' or explicitly reference Rule 18.3. If you are unsure if your phrase was clear, assume it was not and accept the penalty if the original ball is lost.
Playing Too Close
If you hit the provisional ball from a position closer to the hole than where the original ball is likely to be, the provisional status is lost. You cannot then claim it as a provisional if the original is found.
